How to Eliminate Urine Odors from Carpet

Carpet holds onto odors. When urine soaks into the fibers, it doesn’t just stay on the surface. It seeps into the padding and backing, creating a long-term source of odor that standard cleaning methods can't reach. Spraying air fresheners or applying disinfectants won’t fix the problem. You need a solution that penetrates deeply and breaks down the odor at its source.

Why Carpet Odors Are So Tough

Urine contains proteins and uric acid crystals that bond tightly to carpet fibers and padding. As the moisture evaporates, the crystals remain and produce a strong ammonia-like smell. If not treated properly, the odor returns every time humidity rises or the area gets wet again. Regular cleaning methods can push the urine deeper, making the problem worse.

The Real Solution: Enzyme Cleaners

Enzyme cleaners don’t mask odors. They destroy the source. Bacteria-based enzyme products, like Hillyard Take Down®, digest the proteins and waste that cause urine odor. They go beyond the surface and attack what’s in the backing and underlayment.

How to Use Take Down® on Carpet

  • Mix Take Down® with water at a 1:1 ratio
  • Spray the solution generously on the urine spot
  • Cover the area with a damp towel and leave it for one hour
  • Remove the towel and extract using a carpet extractor filled with:
    • Hillyard Clean Action II® (1 oz. per gallon)
    • Plus 2 oz. per gallon of Take Down®

This method allows the enzymes to work into the carpet and padding, neutralizing the odor completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Take Down® with disinfectants or bleach?

No. Never mix Take Down® with bleach, ammonia, or disinfectants. Always review the directions for use on the label. Adding other cleaning solutions to products may interfere with the enzymes, preventing them from working effectively.

How long does it take for the odor to go away?

You should notice improvement after the first application. Complete odor removal may take several treatments, depending on how deeply the urine has soaked.

Can I use this method on old urine stains?

Yes. The enzymes in Take Down® work on fresh and old urine deposits. The key is allowing time for the product to soak and fully neutralize the residue.
